Construction Permits in Ohio

In the State of Ohio, permits are required for all construction projects, including:

  • New construction

  • Alterations or additions

  • Moving or enlarging a structure

  • Replacements or repairs

  • Equipment installation

  • Changes in use or occupancy

  • Site work such as location changes, maintenance, or demolition

Plans and specifications will only be approved if the proposed project complies with Chapters 3781 and 3791 of the Ohio Revised Code, along with all rules adopted by the State Board of Building Standards.

Property owners are permitted to exceed the minimum code requirements when desired, as outlined in Section 102.9.

This code also applies to one, two, and three-family dwellings and their accessory structures, but only to the extent described in Section 310 of the Ohio Building Code.For detailed requirements and exemptions, see the full Ohio Building Code at the following link:
